THE #1 SONGS FROM 2005 IN DETAIL

ENCORE (Eminem) (4 inconsec. weeks at no.1)
Dec 3, 10, Dec 24, 31)

The tightest jam on Eminem Encore was the title track, a 4-week no. 1 holder in December of 2004. Anytime Dr. Dre shows up on a track, it's a big event, so combine that with a stellar vocal from Nate Dogg and the usual high standards of Eminem, and you have a song that dominated the charts for good reason.

THE COURAGE TO LOVE SOMEBODY (Pride of Lions) (2 weeks at no. 1)
Jan 7, 14

After building a solid foundation with the debut CD, Pride of Lions roared back in late '04 and 2005 with The Destiny Stone. First single, "Courage", was the band's second no. 1 ("Sound of Home" was their first) and the first of 5 Pride of Lions tracks that hit the Top 40 in 2005.

LIKE TOY SOLDIERS (Eminem) (1 week at no. 1)
Jan 21

Shortly after "Encore" vacated the no. 1 spot, Eminem was back... with his third no. 1 hit in as many months from "Encore". This was his 8th no. 1 as a solo act and his 9th if you include his no. 1 collaboration with D-12, "My Band".

SOMEONE LIKE YOU (Stage Dolls) (2 weeks at no. 1)
Jan 28, Feb 4

After coming close twice in 2004 ("Get a Life" and "You're the One"), Stage Dolls finally hit the top in 2005 with third single and beautiful ballad, "Someone Like You".

BOULEVARD OF BROKEN DREAMS (Green Day) (5 weeks at no. 1)
Feb 11, 18, 25, Mar 4, 11

First-ever no. 1 for Green Day and the song that helped keep American Idiot the no. 1 album for 12 weeks!

STAND MY GROUND (Within Temptation) (2 weeks at no. 1)
Mar 18, 25

The success of Nightwish meant other female-fronted goth metal bands were sure to follow. Within Temptation actually did better than Nightwish in 2005, as this first of two chart toppers clearly shows.

HOLIDAY (Green Day) (3 weeks at no. 1)
Apr 1, 8, 15

Green Day logged a total of 9 weeks at no. 1 on the Top 40, a feat matched only by Pendragon in 2005. Second no. 1 and third single, "Holiday", took occupation of no. 1 a mere 3 weeks after "Boulevard".

BITCHES AIN'T SHIT (Ben Folds) (1 week at no. 1)
Apr 22

A rare case of a song that was only available as a download and a rare vinyl-only B-side hitting no. 1. Ben Folds' cover of the Dr. Dre track echoed Dynamite Hack's similar sounding hip hop cover, "Boyz-N-the-Hood" (2000).

IN MY DREAMS (Wig Wam) (5 weeks at no. 1)
Apr 29, May 5, 12, 19, 26

A winning song in the Eurovision contest, and a 5-time chart champion on the Top 40, this song literally blasted onto the charts! A #16 debut was followed by a 14-notch jump to no. 2 and then the inevitable seizure of no. 1 for 5 weeks!

B.Y.O.B. (BRING YOUR OWN BOMBS) (System of a Down) (1 week at no. 1)
Jun 3

First-ever no. 1 hit for System of a Down!

LET ME GO (John Wetton/Geoffery Downes) (4 inconsec. weeks at no. 1)
June 10, 17, 24, July 8)

A reunion of two of the central members of Asia had all the elements of the former band. The second highest debut of the year (#9), this powerhouse took the charts by storm in late May, and didn't leave the Top 40 until the end of summer. In that time, it logged 4 inconsecutive weeks at the top and is crowned no. 1 on the year-end Top 100.

MEMORIES (Within Temptation) (1 week at no. 1)
July 1

Second of two no. 1 hits for Within Temptation. Only two other CDs spent longer on the Top 10 Album Chart than their Silent Force breakthrough: American Idiot (30 weeks) and Icon (33 weeks).

NO MORE CLOUDY DAYS (The Eagles) (8 weeks at no. 1)
Jul 15, 22, 29, Aug 5, 12, 19, 26, Sep 2

Like the Ben Folds track, this was also a tough song to find on the CD format. Only available on their Live in Melbourne Farewell Tour DVD and on a rare promo-only 4 track sampler, this song was definitely not tough to find at the top of the charts. It spent 8 weeks there, becoming The Eagles' longest running no. 1 and one of the longest running no. 1 hits ever. Including "No More Cloudy Days", there have only been 12 different songs that have spent 8 weeks or more at no. 1 in the last 21 years of chart compilation.

THE PLACE IN YOUR HEART (Journey)(3 weeks at no. 1)
Sept 9, 16, 23

Journey's "Generations" may have missed the top spot on the album chart (#2) but its first single went the distance on the Top 40. It became their 12th no. 1 overall, and fifth with lead singer, Steve Augeri.

WAKE ME UP WHEN SEPTEMBER ENDS (Green Day) (1 week at no. 1)
Sept 30

Fittingly, this song hit no. 1 at the end of September, and went on to log 23 weeks on the Top 40. Only one other song spent more time on the charts in 2005: "Ohio is For Lovers" by Hawthorne Heights amassed 24 weeks.

NO PLACE FOR THE INNOCENT (Pendragon) (5 weeks at no. 1)
Oct 7, 14, 21, 28, Nov 4

Not surprisingly, the 1st new studio album from Pendragon in 4 years sent its lead-off single straight to no. 1. It became the band's 17th no. 1 hit.

HEY JOSEPHINE (John Wetton/Geoffery Downes) (4 weeks at no. 1)
Nov 11, 18, 25, Dec 2

Second of 2 no. 1 hits for John Wetton/Geoffery Downes, whose "Icon" spent 18 weeks atop the Album Chart. This tied John Wetton's "Battle Lines" (which also spent 18 weeks at no. 1) but couldn't match the 20 weeks logged by Journey's "Trial By Fire" in 1996 and 1997.

SOU' BY SOU'WEST (Pendragon) (4 weeks at no. 1)
Dec 9, 16, 23, 30

The second single entered the chart at no. 8, making it the biggest debut of the year. It also quickly became Pendragon's 18th no. 1 hit- no other band or artist has had more.

To qualify for this year-end chart, songs and albums must have peaked on the Top 40 Favorites Chart between Dec 24, 2004 and Dec 16, 2005. Any songs or albums still moving up on the charts on or after the Dec 16, 2005 cut-off date will be charted on 2006's year-end survey. For a look back at 2004's year-end survey, click here.
